The Seduction Community and Pick Up Artists (PUAs)

Female reader beware. If you're reading this, at least one man out there wants to get into your pants.

Even before the appearance of the "seduction community" or its members (who call themselves PUAs, or "Pick Up Artists") men have been trying to improve their attractiveness and approach to women in order to increase their chances of sexual activity.

And really, all people are targets for the seduction community, and these "seduction experts" are no longer amateurs. There's a professional world of pickup artists out there, and it is headed your way, disguised as it may be in metrosexuality or the "worship of women".

Pickup Artists

The Seduction Community - Pick Up ArtistsThese pickup artists go by names like Mystery, Lysander, Matador, and DeAngelo. The members of the seduction community wear flamboyant clothing and accessories, including piercings, tattoos, well-groomed nails, and even the occasional clutch for holding coverup and loose change.

These men have code words to describe you and your attributes as well as their own tactics – words like:

  • DDB

  • neg

  • hit,

  • close

  • *close

  • DHV

  • SHB.

If this doesn't scare you, you may be one of the few women who seem to respond to the kind of attacks these men are taught by their various "gurus". Experts in the field of seduction (whose methods draw from Psychology 101, hypnotism, Deepak Chopra, linguistics, even supernatural or magic sources) publish or privately release material intended to school men in the art of 'game' – when you hear 'game' just think of a guy's entirety: what he says, his behavior, his personality, looks, clothing, possessions, etc.

Seduction Experts

Seduction experts are often unattractive (to convince you they are schooled in the art of approaching and being rejected by women) and promise anything to get you to fork over anything from 40 to several thousand dollars – one progenitor of the hypnosis and suggestion methods, Ross Jeffries, claims to "make women" have orgasms "onstage without touching them" from various distances away. These claims are apparently substantiated in his material – available to you immediately in cheap eBook form for a steep price.

What some enterprising 'students' of Game do is take these methods and claim them as their own, tweaking things and leading their own flock. This is the source of the hilarious in-fighting at places like the online newsgroup alt.seduction.fast – meeting places for the seduction community (the few that are open to the public) are full of back-and-forth between industry giants like "Tyler Durden" and "Cliff".

These spats even garner media attention – every few months some reporter discovers the seduction community and either tries to infiltrate and expose the scene or reviews the scene from such a ridiculous arm's length the expose devolves into scholarly nonsense. Little quality journalism exists about the seduction community, so most people are either unaware of or unconcerned with it.

Seduction Community Websites

Some of the seduction community members-only sites claim memberships as high as 30,000 – the average seems to be 20,000 and so-called industry experts tout this number as the general "number of PUAs in America". Seems like a larger number than possible when you consider the bland, everyday philosophy these guys live by. Who really needs a seduction guru to learn that "women don't want you to be sensitive" and you should not "be your girlfriend's girlfriend."

But there is money to be made in this community, as there are many gurus and big name writers and theorists. From the seemingly genuine and unthreatening masculinism of David DeAngelo to the weirder hypnotic and "deep-game" thinking of Neil Strauss, there is no lack of variety in the world of seduction theory. Why would so many be joining and (seemingly) prospering at this venture if it weren't profitable?

Many of the older seduction gurus are "retiring" (though some, like Neil Strauss, are "retiring" as a publicity stunt – if it's good enough for athletes, it's good enough for the community) and younger PUAs are stepping into their place. One positive aspect of this trend is that the newer seduction coaches are changing the community, making it more user-friendly and altering people's perception of the seduction scene.

Books, like Strauss' own The Game, are appearing more professional than their eBook or fax printout precursors, and the material being taught appears to be at least more based in actual psychology, as the social phenomenological considerations of members of the online community like David of Cliffslist.com. Perhaps the younger generation will mellow some of the more sexist-leaning philosophies of PUAs?

Seduction Gurus' Beliefs

So what does the seduction community teach? It depends which seduction guru you follow. But two important general beliefs include:

1. Physical intimacy with beautiful women is the most important thing in a man's life.

Why else concentrate so hard on it, asking men ("students") to pay large amounts of money for advice that could lead to this intimacy? And who can really argue with this?

In modern times, the scene started with a book released in 1970 called How to Pick Up Girls, author Eric Weber's magnum opus on seduction. But really, writing on seduction, dating, and desire has existed since writing itself – most notably during the days of the royal courts. These beliefs are held deep in the male psyche – even those of us who disagree can see the logic in it – and thus are easily manipulated.

2. Women must be overpowered in order to achieve this physical intimacy.

Part of these men's problem with women could stem from this belief alone. All PUAs, regardless of method, approach women from this point of view – why else would "seduction" be necessary at all? It is the first belief – that physical intimacy is so important that makes the second belief poisonous and possibly even dangerous to women.

The Science of Seducing Women

Some of what the seduction community preaches is based in real science, and these are the beliefs that hold the most water. As mentioned before, some of the advice given by these men is not "incorrect" in technical terms. Books like The Red Queen by Matt Ridley or The Mating Mind by Geoffrey Miller are frequently quoted. And these quotations are tossed about as if they were God's truth.

But at least the members of the community have some amount of science, hard or soft, to back them up. Even the creepier aspects of Jeffries' method, such as placing suggestive words into everyday speech to "train" the subconscious impulses of a woman, have a basis in scientific practice – even if that practice is the training of dogs.

Unfortunately for the seduction community, it is this same science that threatens to knock down what they believe, as social science changes and shows that traits like empathy and genuine attraction are what attract people, not the schemes and hypnosis of PUAs.

The credo of most PUAs is the same as that of the Boy Scouts (no, not "be prepared", but that other motto, the one that meant I had to pick up trash, sweep leaves, and make sure fires were absolutely dead. I'm talking about "Leave her better than you found her", the attitude that led some modern feminist thinkers to sit on the side on the PUAs.

Some feminist critics, in defending the seduction community scene, suggest that all these men are doing is providing a better atmosphere and more opportunities for the women they are dating. The argument is made that "these men would otherwise be treating these women in the manners of which we disapprove" – but this sounds like a cultural or social passing of the buck, asserting that men in essence don't need to change, only to provide more "opportunities" socially for women.

The seduction scene is huge, and growing by the day. As the gurus of the seduction scene get older and retire and settle down with families, you have to question if they truly believed in their mission to begin with. Maybe the men who participate in the scene are just intelligent softies – guys who want marriage, family, kids, the whole thing, only they have a mathematical method of approach. If this is the case, then close on I say to the PUAs. Close on.
