Divorce Support Groups

Divorce is so common in America that you can now find divorce support groups in every community, no matter how small. Estimates of the current divorce rate in America say that about 55% of marriages are ending in divorce within just a few years. When you need help after a divorce, support groups are a great way to keep your head above water.

What Are Divorce Support Groups?

A divorce support group is a group made up of divorced people and some sort of counselor or group leader. These support groups  meet regularly to talk about the stress of divorce and help each other get through that tough time just after a divorce.

People in divorce support groups connect with other divorced people, those who are in a similar situation. Only other divorced people really understand how it feels and what you need in terms of support.

How Do Divorce Support Groups Work?

People in divorce support groups talk about their problems and offer possible solutions to one another. The idea is to work out new ways to approach the problems that are caused by a divorce, to get out of your divorce rut.

The most useful part of a divorce support group are these tips that you get from people who are maybe a bit further along on the road to divorce than you are. The idea is two-fold, to make new friends who listen to your problems and help you find solutions and to gain experience from other people who have gone through divorce before you.

Divorce Support Groups and Your Family

Too often after a divorce we depend on our friends and relatives to get us through. Many people totally fall apart, and without a support system in place, they lean on their closest allies for help. This is stressful for those people who love us and is ultimately not a viable way to stay mentally health post-divorce.

Divorce groups make it easier to imagine yourself as a divorced person, and to see divorce as something other than the end of the world. Members of divorce support groups are there to share with you the things they did to become healthy again after a divorce, and you’re likely to make a lot of new friends along the way.

Another benefit of the divorce support group is the advice you get about your children. The kids from the marriage that just broke up are going to be affected just as strongly as you are–divorce support group members can give you good advice on single parenting and how to help kids through a divorce. You can learn a lot about the financial side of single parenting from people who have more experience than you, not to mention the legal aspect of divorce.

Choosing a Divorce Support Group

Luckily, there are so many divorce support groups in America, you probably don’t have to travel too far to get to one. There may even be multiple support groups in your town, meeting at churches, meeting halls, even restaurants or library study rooms.

Choosing the right divorce support group is a matter of trying out groups until you find one that works. Maybe one group fits your work schedule better, or there are more men or women at one particular group. You may have to shop around at multiple divorce support groups before you settle on the one that’s going to fit your lifestyle.

Divorce support groups are free and easy ways to recover after a difficult divorce.
